BIOGRAPHY
Lee is a practicing artist residing in Bendigo with her husband and three children and is currently undertaking a Phd in Fine Art at Latrobe University. Her art career over the past years has involved inclusion as a finalist in major Australian Art prizes such as The Blake Prize (Sydney) 2007, and Blake Directors Cut Exhibition 2009 and 2011, and the Tattersall’s Landscape Prize (Brisbane), John Coburn Prize (Blake Society),Redeemer Lutheran Foundation Religious Art Award and the National Tertiary Art Award. Her work has been exhibited widely, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, China, and New York, and has been included in major exhibition in Australia, such as the Blake Prize sister exhibition ‘Stations of the Cross’ Exhibition in Sydney as one of 15 Australian artists alongside major Australian artists, such As Euan McLeod, Elizabeth Cummings, Amanda Penrose-Hart, Lachlan Warner, and John Peart. Lee, also by invitation takes part each year in the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, Texas, Christmas exhibition.
During her years at La Trobe, Lee has received scholarships, for both artist and academic endeavors including the Australian Postgraduate Award for her Masters and again for Doctoral Research, an International Universities Scholarship for study at James Madison University, Virginia in the USA and a travelling research scholarship to Europe in 2008 that highly influenced her current work.
Her PhD research focuses on the Seventeenth Century Italian Baroque Bel Composto. Lee, as part of her research has been invited to speak at various conferences on the Baroque and Neo-baroque eg. At the Barocco Nova conference in Canada, 2011 and more recently at the International Baroque/Neo-baroque Conference 2013 at the NGV where Lee presented her research and associated art works.
Lee’s work is a reinterpretation of the 17th C Bel Composto, within the context of contemporary art practices and society particularly looking at sacred spaces and the interweaving of life and spirituality. Inspired by the Italian religious art of the Baroque period, Lee’s new works often described as neo-baroque, continues her study of the embracing nature of the bel composto and the Deleuzian concept of the Baroque Fold, in particular of woven cloth and its ability to enclose and envelop, to create barriers, enclosures, to hide and conceal. Lee explores the idea of the intertwining nature of the thread as a representation of interaction between the corporeal and incorporeal worlds, heaven and earth, creator and creation. These new large paintings provide a close-up, cinematic view of the cloth, which have a meditative, prayer space like quality about them. Again, embracing the nature of the baroque Lee’s work paradoxically exhibits both chaotic surfaces with a meditative undercurrent.
